Network BC provides leadership and support for the strategic use of telecommunications in British Columbia. Currently, bridging the digital divide in rural and remote areas is a major focus.

The work of Network BC supports the Province’s commitment to open government and open data by improving access to the telecommunications infrastructure that citizens and businesses require to actively engage with their government. It is a key component of the Province’s strategic approach to make services more accessible to citizens and businesses through information technology.

For rural and remote areas, Network BC develops strategies to expand and sustain connectivity.  This public service requires Network BC to coordinate and facilitate broadband connectivity among provincial and federal governments, non-government organizations, communities and the telecommunications sector. Network BC is recognized internationally for its accomplishments in helping raise the proportion of citizens with broadband access.

First Nations comprise many of B.C.’s rural and remote communities. As part of achieving government’s goal of 100 percent connectivity, Network BC is committed to working with First Nations leadership to connect all 203 B.C. First Nations. This partnership will realize the shared vision of improved quality of life for all First Nations citizens.

Network BC provides a focal point for dialogue regarding the telecommunication sector’s role in bridging the digital divide in British Columbia. Network BC also facilitates partnerships and collaborations that result in improved connectivity for citizens and businesses.

Provincial ministries and local governments rely on Network BC’s expertise on the strategic use of telecommunications and its potential to enable citizens’ access to provincial programs, data and information on health, education and economic opportunities.

Network BC is part of the Strategic Partnerships Office within the Office of the Chief Information Officer for the Province of British Columbia.
